“This is a big day for Rivian and a big day for Georgia,” said Rivian CEO and Founder RJ Scaringe. “Standing here on the site of our new manufacturing site, it's hard not to feel goosebumps. Soon, we will have a facility that employs thousands of Georgians.”
On Tuesday, September 16, Rivian held a groundbreaking ceremony at the site of the company’s new manufacturing facility, joined by Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, Georgia Speaker of the House Jon Burns, and other state and local officials.
The new facility represents a multi-billion investment, expected to create 7,500 jobs by 2030. Customer vehicle production is planned to begin in 2028, starting with the midsize, 5-seater R2 SUV and R3 crossover.
“We appreciate the company’s commitment, tenacity, and their ‘stickability.’ Their commitment never wavered and ours didn’t either,” said Governor Brian Kemp. “This facility will bring generational benefits to the people that call this region home. I’m talking about the grandchildren growing up in this community and the opportunities they will have because of this project.”
Billions in economic benefits are expected from this project—supporting suppliers, vendors and local businesses in Jasper, Morgan, Newton and Walton Counties and surrounding region. Rivian is also working to develop partnerships with universities, technical colleges, and local, regional, and state institutions as it scales.
“From the start, Rivian’s plans to manufacture in the state have gone hand in hand with investing in the local communities,” said Serra Hall, executive director of Newton County Industrial Development Authority. “We didn’t just choose a company to come to our neighborhood. We chose Rivian because of its people and how they have pursued community engagement.”
Rivian also held a community day on Sunday, September 14, bringing together nearly 1,000 neighbors and friends for a fun day of celebration—featuring local businesses, entertainment and family activities.
“The event really brought folks together in the best way,” said Mike Hopkins, executive director of the Newton County Water and Sewerage Authority. “The setting was beautiful, the turnout was strong, and everyone had a great time enjoying the food, music, games, and some of the best-tasting water in the state. Welcome to the community, Rivian.”
One of the celebration highlights was the Rivian Adventure Track and Rally Road, taking families and attendees on a ride along to experience the thrills of an R1S or R1T.
