The husband-and-wife duo own Aunts et Uncles, a Caribbean plant-based café, lifestyle store and cultural hub in Flatbush, Brooklyn. Their business blends food, fashion and a deep commitment to heritage and community.
“Our space, we call it the living room. A lot of people say that when they come in, it feels like a warm hug,” Nicole said. “We make sure you know your neighbor, and that you feel like you’re at home.”
For Mike, who grew up in the neighborhood, this is very much intentional. He has a concept he likes to call “making it in” – the opposite of all those people he heard talking about one day “making it out” of the neighborhood.
“Instead of extracting those resources and bringing them elsewhere, I feel like it’s our duty here to be an example to many people across the country and across the globe of what it looks like to make it in your community,” Mike said.
Mike and Nicole are two of the Rivian owners featured in “Adventure is in Us,” a centerpiece of our new Meatpacking District concept experience that lets visitors interact with the stories of real Rivian owners.
The stories showcase the spirit of adventure that unites Rivian owners, exploring the broad spectrum of ways people define adventure from running a popular restaurant in Mike and Nicole's case, to stargazing, to camping in sub-zero temperatures.
The couple use electricity to cook at the restaurant and use their R1S daily to move all kinds of equipment and supplies, including to catering jobs. Again, both very intentional choices.
“We want to be sustainable,” Mike said, adding that the couple share many values with Rivian, which is part of why they chose their R1S. “Rivian cares holistically about the human experience on this planet and creating products to make sure we are here for a long time.”
