That’s why in addition to industry-leading mapping technology with critical features like range on arrival estimates, charging scores, and charging stop selection, we are building the Rivian Adventure Network (RAN)—a growing network of fast, reliable chargers, powered by 100% renewable energy and located to support our drivers wherever their adventures take them. With a NACS DC adapter, our owners also have access to more than 21,500 DC fast chargers across North America through the Tesla Supercharger network.
We also believe a great charging experience should be for everyone, so late last year we launched our Joshua Tree Charging Outpost, the first site with Rivian’s next-generation chargers, compatible with all electric vehicles. Most recently, we opened our Hamptons Charging Outpost with the same functionality. Designed in-house and manufactured at our Normal plant, these chargers elevate the RAN experience you know and love and with a larger screen, taller chargers and longer cables for even better visibility and access. Additionally, we began a retrofit program of existing charging sites to make the entire network accessible to all electric vehicle drivers. Now, over 75 percent of the network is open to all electric vehicles, continuing Rivian’s mission to Keep the World Adventurous Forever, for everyone.
We chatted with AJ Hatzis, Technical Program Manager on the Rivian Adventure Network team, to talk about what's ahead—from new features to a growing charging network—and what excites him most about working on a team that is helping unlock adventure for everyone, everywhere.
Let’s start with what’s new. Tell us about what’s happening in California, and what are Rivian’s plans to open charging for all EVs at Rivian Adventure Network sites in other parts of the country?
AJ: I’m excited to say there is a lot going on! In the last month, we have opened up almost every California site to all EVs and we are now in the final push for our sites in Western states. Keep an eye out in Arizona and the Pacific Northwest for upcoming sites we will open to all EVs. To see what sites are near you, check out your vehicle Infotainment or the Rivian app. You can also check out our recently improved Charging Map to see where all our sites are and which ones are compatible with all EVs.
What else has the Rivian Adventure Network team been up to?
In the last month, we launched our first sites with native NACS connectors, beginning at our Charging Outposts and rolling out across sites to support the NACS transition. Initially these sites will be mixed with both CCS and NACS connectors, and over time we will phase in fully NACS sites, supporting the broader industry transition to the charging standard and preparing for R2, which is NACS native.
I am also excited to say as part of Rivian’s partnership with Google Maps, we now have live availability directly in Google Maps. This makes us one of the few networks with live availability directly within the Google Maps app. This makes finding Adventure Network sites easier and lets drivers know how busy a site is in real time.
More and more people are buying EVs, but there are still many who worry that the charging infrastructure is not reliable enough to own a fully electric vehicle. What would you say to someone who is hesitant to go fully electric?
I totally hear this anxiety and this is why Rivian is committed to solving the problem from multiple angles. The Rivian Adventure Network will continue to grow in size and scale, providing all EV drivers with the high quality experience customers know and love.
Alongside the build out of the Adventure Network, we are partnering with the best charging networks available to offer customers direct access within your Rivian. Kicking off last year with the Tesla Supercharger network, giving drivers access to over 21,500 chargers, we will continue to partner with key networks growing across the United States and Canada.
Our brilliant software team has created a Charging Score metric to provide customers assurance that when they are routed to a charger it will work as expected. Using real data to rank sites, and where possible only navigating to high scoring sites, customers can feel confident when DC fast charging, Rivian will get you charged up as quickly as possible.
Finally, if you have access to a Home charger, you can always charge up at home overnight and then get out on your next adventure in the morning! One of the awesome benefits to EV ownership is that charging isn’t restricted to DC fast charging.
Tell us about your team. What’s it like to work at Rivian on the Charging team?
Working at Rivian has been the most exciting journey, and I feel so lucky to be working with such incredible teammates. One of the best aspects of working on the Adventure Network team is how cross functional our role is. Charging touches so many areas of the EV experience! One day I’m working with our Service partners on the retrofit campaign to improve charging access for all EVs. Then I’m working with the navigation team to implement Google Maps availability and provide more information to our drivers, then it’s into network planning and strategy with our Real Estate team to continue to find more excellent sites across the Adventure Network. This is truly a collaborative team effort and every day brings a new set of challenges we are eager to solve.
What’s your favorite road trip to take using the Rivian Adventure Network?
This is like asking me to pick a favorite child! I love all the sites we’ve pulled together, but if forced to pick I would say our sites in the Sierra Nevada and connecting Yosemite. When I first joined the Adventure Network team, one of my first tasks was to do a scouting trip from our headquarters in Irvine, California, up Highway 395, through Yosemite and then back to the Bay Area where I’m based. In early 2022, our sites weren’t built and it was a vision. Fast forward to 2025, we have launched all the sites, we have additional sites along the route coming soon, and we have opened up that route to all EVs. That area of the Sierra Nevada is absolutely breathtaking, so electrifying that route felt extra special.
