The Rivian Adventure Network is up and running

Rivian has opened its first three DC fast charging sites this month, one in Colorado and two in California, with many more coming online this summer. The fast chargers at Rivian Adventure Network sites are capable of adding up to 140 miles of range to your R1 in just 20 minutes – and every kilowatt-hour our chargers dispense is matched with renewable resources like solar or wind.

Our newest chargers in Colorado and California were built with access to adventure in mind, positioned at departure points for mountains or deserts, plains, forests or canyons. But the expanding Rivian Adventure Network also serves major travel corridors and interstate highways so you can power longer trips from state to state, location to location. Whether you’re heading just up the road or off it entirely, you can charge up for the adventure of your choosing.

The mountain-river town of Salida sits right at the center of Colorado in the Arkansas River Valley, ringed by 14,000-foot peaks and vast pinon-and-juniper mesas. The Arkansas River snakes right through downtown before barreling on across Kansas and Oklahoma to meet the Mississippi River in the state of Arkansas — attracting paddlers, boaters, anglers and swimmers every mile of the way. The ideal basecamp for a variety of nearby adventures, Salida now features four Rivian-specific DC fast chargers, including a pull-through spot for Rivians towing a trailer, camper or boat, as well as four Level 2 Waypoints chargers available to all EV drivers.

We’ve also opened two more fast charging sites along California’s US 395. The southern station in the town of Inyokern unlocks Death Valley National Park, King’s Canyon, the Southern Sierra, and electrifies the popular pilgrimage from Los Angeles to Mammoth. The northern station in Bishop can charge your explorations of places like the Inyo National Forest, the Sierra National Forest, Mono Lake and Yosemite National Park at Tioga Pass.

Rivian was created to help shift the automotive industry to be cleaner, more sustainable, flat-out better for the planet and the creatures who live here. We wanted to build exceptional emissions-free electric adventure vehicles that people would happily give up their fossil-fueled vehicle to drive. But of course the second piece of the equation – Rivian’s charging network— has to be just as robust, so that the sum of vehicle and network is an effortless experience Rivian drivers can trust.

We deeply believe that reliable, convenient charging will be key to the electrification of transportation. Rivian Adventure Network sites will serve critical transportation corridors in all areas of the U.S., urban and rural. Our charging network will also give drivers access to charging (and more peace of mind) in locations further off the beaten path, enabling trips to state and national parks, remote scenic routes, desert tours, wild places – all accessed by an emissions-free, near-silent vehicle.

We manufacture our Rivian Adventure Network DC fast chargers in Normal, Illinois. We developed our charging hardware to support up to 900 volt charging at 300 kW, which is important for our future vehicle roadmap. Developing the chargers entirely in-house allows us to expand our network over the next several years in a cost-efficient, large-scale way. The integration of our charging hardware and software also ensures that pairing your Rivian with a Rivian charger is seamless, smooth and swift. We handle the authentication — all you have to do is plug in, and the electrons start flowing.

Each kilowatt-hour Rivian chargers deliver is matched with renewable energy resources* from solar and wind. This means we develop or purchase enough renewables to meet or exceed the amount of energy that flows through our chargers and into your vehicle. When you plug in at a Rivian charger, you’re partnering with us to develop renewable resources that help reduce carbon emissions and create positive, lasting, community-wide impact.

Many existing charging sites were built for smaller EVs, but Rivian Adventure Network sites accommodate bigger vehicles as well – like the R1T and R1S – and many locations will offer vehicle and trailer pull-through access: No maneuvering or unhooking, just pull in, charge up and pull through. We place our fast charging sites where travel-minded amenities are within easy reach – so while your Rivian is charging, you can charge up, too.

This year, we plan to open Rivian Adventure Network fast charging sites across North America, from coast to coast, on major interstate highways such as I-5, I-80, I-75 and I-95. We’ll also open sites near Arizona’s Coconino National Forest and the Blue Ridge Parkway along the southern and central Appalachian Mountains. The navigation app on your Rivian’s touchscreen helps you find networks nearby. Simply choose your destination, and the built-in trip planner will route you through the most convenient fast charging stops.

To thank our earliest customers and celebrate the network launch, charging at Rivian Adventure Network sites is free for now. We’ll share details on future pricing and membership as the network expands.
