We’ve made significant enhancements to trip planning in our vehicle navigation and with the launch of trip planning in the Rivian mobile app. Trip planning is now powered by A Better Routeplanner (ABRP), the world’s most popular consumer EV route-planner, to deliver better trip plans and charging stop options on extended drives. You can now plan more aspects of your trip, including your preferred arrival range, directly from the center display or the Rivian mobile app version 1.15 or later.Â
Once you enter your destination, you can now see how far you can drive with your current range, what your route will look like, where you can charge, how long it’ll take to charge at each stop, and the approximate range your vehicle will have when you arrive.
This new feature launch is the first of an ongoing series of software updates to improve trip-planning convenience. Future enhancements will include adding multiple stops to trips and even more customization for charger selection.
What it does:
When planning trips, new trip preferences let you set your desired arrival range and your preferred charging networks. When you search for a destination using the mobile app Explore tab, you can plan a trip and send it to your vehicle. You can also adjust your departure range and set the trip date and time from the mobile app, making future trip planning easier. From your vehicle or mobile app, enter where you want to go, and your complete trip plan now includes charging stops, charge times, the entire duration of the trip, and what time you’ll arrive.
What it does to the vehicle:
After entering a destination, you’ll see a new “Trip preferences” option near the “Start navigation” button. You can now select your preferred arrival range and charging networks, in addition to the pre-existing “Avoid” options for highways, tolls, and ferries. You can save the preferences for the trip you’re about to take or tap “Use always” to keep them for every trip.
When you make a trip plan from the Rivian mobile app, you can share it directly with your vehicle, and you’ll see it on the trip navigation screen when you get inside your R1T or R1S.
When to use it:
You can also plan your next adventure on your Rivian mobile app. If you’re heading out to try Camp Mode for an overnight, check for a trip plan that could get you there with ample charge. If your destination is especially remote, like an off-road trailhead, you may want to experiment with different arrival ranges in the app to see how the trip will look before you head out.
If you are looking for a point of interest, you can search for the place in the Rivian app then Send the address to your vehicle navigation, or in Google Maps™ or Apple® Maps, tap the Share option and choose Rivian from the list of apps.
If you’ve recently become a first-time electric adventure vehicle owner and are planning a long road trip, consider getting to know the charging networks within easy driving distance of your home to help determine your preferences. Knowing what to expect can help you have a better driving experience overall.
