In addition to a refreshed app, we improved the vehicle's charging curve for Gen 1 Max Pack and Gen 2 vehicles, getting you more energy in a shorter amount of time at fast chargers. Altogether, this update brings a new energy experience that makes planning, driving and charging on your next adventure easier and confidence-inspiring.
Plus, we have introduced a new optional Multi-factor Drive feature for all Rivian vehicles, adding an extra layer of security, and a significant upgrade to the ML model powering your Gen 2 driver display visualizations.
The Energy app has a brand new look. It now features a glanceable, clean and consistent design with two main tabs: Charging (for energy inflow) and Energy Monitor (for energy outflow). Both sections share a simple, repeatable layout with left, center, and right panes, ensuring a consistent experience across your vehicle and mobile app, with playful touches like Gear Guard expressions to represent your energy efficiency.
Here are the top 5 new features:
1. Learn where energy is going and how it’s being used
The Charging tab shows you how much energy is going directly to your battery pack during a charge session versus the energy being used by other vehicle systems. “Active charge session” provides a detailed breakdown, including battery, overall system consumption, HVAC usage, and any connected accessories. And in the “Energy Monitor” tab, there’s a new chart that shows you how climate, outlets, and drive systems are consuming energy when you’re on the go or parked. This is especially useful at a campsite, giving you more context about how your settings and actions impact the vehicle’s energy efficiency.
2. Trip Target
When using navigation for a trip that includes a charging stop, now it’s easy to see the recommended charge target for the stop from your vehicle or the Rivian mobile app. Simply start your charge, and the app will calculate and notify you (in-vehicle and on your phone) the precise moment you've reached the ideal charge level to continue your adventure.
3. See how efficient your drive is over time
In the “Energy Monitor” tab, there is a new interactive graph where you can see your projected range impact over time while driving or parked, based on insights from your recent driving history. A Gear Guard expression will show you whether your efficiency is high, low or normal for current conditions, and you’ll see helpful tips for maximizing your vehicle’s efficiency.
4. More interactive, toggleable graphics
The graphs across the new Energy app are responsive to your touch, adjustable and show you dynamic cost and time estimates. They also update in real time between your mobile app and center screen—so while your vehicle is charging, you’ll see the same information whether you’re in the driver’s seat or inside a rest stop.
5. Precondition your battery on demand
We've added this highly-requested feature while retaining familiar controls for charging sessions. Now, you can warm or cool your battery pack on demand, even before navigating to a charger, helping to optimize charging speeds when you arrive. A clear banner will indicate when the battery is warming or cooling and when preconditioning is complete.
Both Gen 1 Max Pack and all Gen 2 Rivian vehicles now charge faster and more reliably at DC fast chargers. You'll see quicker charging times, and these speeds are now achievable in a wider range of temperatures. The Gen 2 Large Pack gets an extra boost, charging even faster (up to 215kW) and adding 15% more driving range in just 15 minutes of charging.*
Rivian's engineering team achieved this by creating new ways to optimize battery temperature. We used computer simulations to pinpoint areas for improvement at the cell level and then virtually tested and refined these solutions in a simulated vehicle environment covering extensive real-world conditions. These virtual tests were then validated with actual vehicles—resulting in faster charging times.
This update introduces Multi-factor Drive, an optional, first-of-its-kind feature that lets owners approve every drive. When someone gets behind the wheel, you'll receive an instant notification on your phone or smartwatch and can approve the drive in your mobile app or through your smartwatch. If you don't receive the notification, you can use a time-based passcode in the app. Whether you value added security or have a new driver to keep an eye on, Multi-factor Drive is built for peace of mind.
Your Rivian now has a significantly upgraded understanding of its environment, giving you a more detailed view. Both Gen 1 and Gen 2 vehicles show a richer representation of surrounding vehicles in the driver display.
Gen 2 Rivians gain an upgraded onboard ML model, which enables the 360º view to intelligently detect and render vehicles in complex scenarios like crossing traffic and parking lots, and provides an extended perception range to five lanes (up from three).
