As a Rivian owner, your decision to drive electric is a powerful investment in our planet’s future. However, the full benefits of EVs will only be realized if we reduce the carbon emissions from the energy needed to power them.
That's why we're investing in building a carbon-free grid — and it means you support wind, solar, and other clean energy projects every time you charge your Rivian. The more you drive, the more you help accelerate the shift to renewable energy.
Today, we're sharing an update on our renewable energy investments, our approach to selecting projects, and how this work benefits communities while making economic sense for our business. It's all part of driving toward a carbon-free grid, together.
Last year, Rivian and The Nature Conservancy launched “the 3C toolkit” — a new framework to guide our renewable energy investments towards projects that not only add clean power to the grid, but also carry strong benefits in the key areas of community, climate, and conservation.
No question, clean energy of almost any kind is better than conventional alternatives, but how we assess projects matters. Our approach ensures clean energy development drives local economic growth, protects ecosystems, and increases energy access and affordability, while maintaining financial viability.
Over the past 12 months, we've used the 3C toolkit to build Rivian's renewable energy portfolio, while sharing the toolkit with anyone interested in following an impact-focused approach to clean power investments.
Backed by a growing community of Rivian owners, we have leveraged the 3C toolkit to engage in diverse, innovative, and collaborative clean energy projects — values we believe are key to accelerating momentum towards a zero-emissions electric grid.
Here's a closer look at several clean energy projects Rivian is actively supporting:
Bringing affordable solar to families across rural Illinois.
Reimagining hydropower for farming communities in the West.
Reducing costs for SoCal public schools through solar.
Combining solar and conservation awareness in Mississippi.
Leveraging clean energy and kick-starting a robotics program in North Carolina.
Refining How We Select Projects from the Ground Up
Rivian has partnered with renewable energy platform Galehead Development to proactively build projects from the ground up. Combining Galehead’s powerful LandCommand software with our 3C framework will strengthen our ability to build renewable energy projects that maximize positive impacts, including greater emissions reductions, land and habitat preservation, and reduced energy costs for communities.
Since Rivian’s first customer R1 delivery in 2021, our portfolio of high-impact clean energy projects, enabled by Rivian owners, has continued to grow with wind, solar, and low-impact hydroelectric projects across the country. The map above highlights new projects and major ones already announced, such as our pioneering utility-scale solar project in Paris, Tennessee, and the Starfire Solar project on a former coal mining site in Eastern Kentucky, both of which are bringing renewable energy to local businesses and communities.
With your help, Rivian aims to support at least 7 billion miles of renewable driving every year — enabled by 2GW of clean power capacity — by 2030 through high-impact renewable projects.
When you take delivery, we will match charging with 100% renewable energy for all new R1 purchases for up to 10,000 miles.
No matter where customers charge, they are powering their adventures with 100% renewable energy and contributing to a cleaner energy grid for all.
This work is the result of Rivian drivers doing what they do best — hitting the road and making lasting memories in their vehicles. Many owners charge with the Rivian Adventure Network, which is entirely powered by 100% renewable energy. Combined with our holistic approach to deploying renewable energy projects, the miles you log directly benefit the communities and natural spaces we all cherish.
