We deployed another over-the-air update today. Tell us about the software that enables that.
Wassym: Our software architecture was developed entirely in-house, a complete end-to-end solution, so we have a lot of freedom and control. Connectivity is not just a pipe feeding live navigation data or media content for a richer entertainment experience, but a critical foundation to our home-grown over-the-air update technology that is capable of updating all vehicle computers. It's the backbone that enables us to make continuous improvements to our vehicle controls, dynamics and features. Being a connected car, we’re also able to collect anonymized data insights from the fleet. This allows us to make the vehicle more robust over time, even improving reliability.
Can you give an example?
Wassym: The 10.1 update we just deployed. Earlier this year, our data team was analyzing telemetry insights trying to figure out why in rare cases our low voltage battery was depleting. They identified a correlation between specific driving use cases and certain hardware and software versions as the potential issue. Since it was such an edge case, reproducing it in the lab or with our beta test fleet of 800+ vehicles was insufficient. So, in a previous update, we added extra logging in the background to gain more insight on what was happening. While it was completely invisible to the customer, with that data we were able to not only confirm the issue, but quickly get to a fix. In a matter of weeks, we were able to source the issue, add more protections in the software stack, and deploy the fix. We pushed it live today.
What else does our software enable?
Wassym: Last month we sent an OTA to our key fob. This to me is such a great example of how deep our vertical integration goes. Our ability to control the software and enhance everything down to something that isn’t even attached to the car is pretty unique. Our software also helps us a lot with owner communication — with our direct-to-consumer model that’s pretty important. This includes everything from live chat and booking service appointments through our app, to messaging and reminders right in the vehicle. It’s all based on a tight integration between the vehicle software and the cloud back-end service systems. All of which we control.
