Shifting Gears
Centrally located in Hayes Valley, our San Francisco flagship space is a restored auto body shop that has been in the neighborhood since the 1920s. This location allowed us to join the fabric of the neighborhood, with unique shops, cafes, eateries, green space, and nearby freeway access, all in one spot. It is a living example of our mission and the perfect backdrop to showcase our products and learn about our brand. We preserved the building to reflect the charm of the neighborhood and history of the site, while adding unique touches that blend the past and future of automotive innovation.
Hayes Valley has been a positive force for all walks of life, with a thoughtful approach to supporting and preserving the neighborhood's diversity, making it a natural place for Rivian to show up. It underwent a major transformation after the 1989 earthquake damaged a freeway that ran through the neighborhood. A grassroots campaign led by Patricia Walkup successfully advocated for the freeway's removal and its replacement with a boulevard and green spaces. This revitalization effort has become a model for other urban renewal projects in Hayes Valley, including micro green spaces and funding the temporary sculpture installed each year in Patricia’s Green.
A Labor of Love
After four years of restoration, design work, and collaboration with the community, preservation experts, and local makers, we're thrilled to have preserved the history of this site and celebrate its architectural characteristics.
The architectural character of the building, from its old factory windows to its brick and timber structure, reflects its long-standing function as an auto-garage. The back of the building was once covered with street art which was repurposed as artwork in the space. We purposefully chose an open concept and big windows to mirror the openness of the Hayes Valley neighborhood and Patricia’s Green. The tree-lined pedestrian-friendly nature of Linden Alley drove us to create bi-folding doors, allowing us to create an open indoor/outdoor experience.
Inside, you’ll find thoughtful details everywhere. The artwork, signage, upholstery, and custom furniture come from local artists, including Alexis Moran, Marina Contro, and Jeffrey Sincich. Handmade cushions and reupholstered vintage pieces add warmth and character, making the space feel inviting and rooted in the community.
Beyond artwork, visitors will find an inviting, open-air experience. There is a gear shop, library, a long table that doubles as a community gathering space, plenty of seating, and countless live plants. The front section of the space is dedicated to San Francisco and Hayes Valley, with photos of the past history of our site.
Another goal with our Hayes Valley space was to spark a conversation about transportation and connectivity in a bike-friendly city like San Francisco. By creating new bike corrals and emphasizing safe bike paths in the area, we’re underscoring our dedication to safely connect people to their communities and nature. If you're biking through the city, we invite you to park on the Linden Alley side of our space. Once inside, explore another form of mobility with our vehicles.
Service Center
In addition to a community space, we’re honoring the building's past life and original function as an auto body shop and opening an express service center offered on site. The San Francisco community has embraced Rivian and our vehicles, and we’re excited to be able to provide service alongside the space. This will give our owners a more local option in the city for service when their vehicle needs it, allowing them to get back on the road and off to their next adventure.
